There are many different things that would be great auction items---plants, coffee, services, dining, vacation rental evenings, goods, new books, new or nearly new horse items, the list is endless.

To make this easier, we have prepared a letter that you can hand any potential donor. Here is what it says....

Aloha,

The Hawaii Isle Dressage and Combined Training Association (HIDCTA) is currently planning our 1st Annual Spring Hunter – Jumper Show, to be held Sunday, May 6 2007 on the grounds of Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Waimea. This show is an HIDCTA year-end awards show. It helps support the efforts of HIDCTA to further develop the knowledge and skills of our local riders in a supportive and safe environment.

In conjunction with this event, we will be hosting a Silent Auction to raise additional funds for various club activities and programs such as educational clinics, symposiums, equipment maintenance and adult/youth scholarships. We are seeking donations for the Silent Auction, and hope that you or your business will be able to contribute. Merchandise or gift certificates in any amount would be greatly appreciated. Businesses and individuals making donations to the Silent Auction will be acknowledged in our show program and via announcements throughout the day of the show.

If you have any questions, or need to make arrangements for a pick up of a donation, please contact Lisa Johnston at 959-9075, or Pattie Rechtman at 966-6235.

HIDCTA thanks you and looks forward to your support of safe and educational equestrian activities on our island. We would also like to extend an invitation to you and your associates to join us for this event. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

You can dowload the letter here.
The letter is on Page 1. This 2-page file also contains a "list" (page 2) page to make it easy for you to keep track of any donations you have gathered. A nice idea is to print 10 copies of the letter, and keep them in a file folder in your car. If you staple the list to the inside, all you need to do is go about your day, and mention the auction to anyone that you think might enjoy this exposure and advertising opportunity. Your hairdresser, grocer, nursery, whomever....! Once they say "yes, I would LOVE TO SUPPORT THE CLUB," leave them the letter, collect their certificate, and then write their information on your list!

If they dont have a certificate we will be happy to make one. Just write down the information and let Pattie know.

May 6 Hunter Jumper Show!!!!!

The Spring 2006 Hunter Jumper Show is Coming May 6th!!

The show will be held at HPA in Waimea on the Polo/Jumping field.

This show will have a new format, and opportunities for riders to jump in Equitation, Hunter, and Jumper divisions. We had a great turnout, with many riders young and old coming out to play with their horses. There were many new faces, which was wonderful to see. It was such a success that we're hoping to do another on June 3, so mark your calendars. Thanks go out to ALL volunteers who helped make it happen, especially manager Maureen Goto, judge Barbara Kankainen, and Pattie Rechtman, who was corralled at the last minute to be our announcer for the day. (I was stuck in a motel with no emergency power next to the airport for 12 hours after the quake. Not fun.)

The clinic was at Hilltop Equestrian Center, a wonderful 40+ horse stable in Waimanalo run by Suzi Hillos. It's really the center of all things dressage on Oahu, and they put on a terrific program, coordinated by Martha McDaniel and the Aloha State Dressage Society.

Eight riders rode with Jan Eberling, one of America's finest riders and certainly one of our premier trainers and instructors. He's a team gold medal winner at the Pan Am games, and holds many U.S. national championships. Jan's great teaching style combines enthusiasm, wit, gentle humor, and a superb appreciation for the rapport between a good horse and an empathetic rider. ("Reward, reward! Talk to him, scratch him on the withers, make him feel proud and happy to work for you." and "I always hum to my horses, but quietly so the judges don't hear.")

About 25 people from Maui, Oahu and the Big Island also audited the clinic.

The riders and horses ranged from Training Level (Breezy Burgoon on Vancouver M, a 4-year-old Dutch warmblood with specatcular gaits) to several FEI level horses, including Suzi Hillis's Dante, a very fit 18-year-old Trakehner/Dutch Warmblood and Kelly Ryan on Barnauli, a 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding. HIDCTA's Nancy Steinecke rode Rambo, a TB/QH gelding she'd rescued years ago from near-starvation. He's now in great shape, owned and shown by Janice Campbell on Oahu, and working well at Second Level.

No matter what the level, Jan gave each horse and rider his perfect attention and wonderful teaching. A common reminder was to sit "in the saddle," not perch on the front of the pelvis; and to keep the hands lower and steadier. Jan reminded all of us of the absolute necessity to follow the training scale: first comes rhythm and relaxation, in every single ride, no matter what level horse and rider were actually performing at. Then connection, ridden always from back to front. Only then can come straightness, impulsion, collection.

For each horse, Jan had a different suggestion for exercises to manage problems and improve the qualities. For a horse that was a bit quick and unsteady, there were transitions and circles. Serpentines to strengthen a weak side and create bend. And lots of lateral work! Leg-yields for the lower-level horses, shoulder in and haunches in and half-pass for those that were ready to handle it.

The same horses and riders rode a second time on Sunday. Martha McDaniel reported that Jan was a real trouper regarding the earthquake -- the clinic went on as planned, minus electricity. When Nancy Steineke was unable to trailer Rambo in from Janice Campbell's place on Sunday, Jan drove himself to HER place and gave a private lesson there! What a guy!

Thanks to everyone who put this together, and all the riders who rode. Wonderful!

Sarah

Scores for October 8 Show

The Open Equitation Class. My friends, Sacramento really knows how to build a fairgrounds!! Rachel and I were lucky enough to visit the Horse Expo this summer, and were able to see many clinics, vendors, breed demonstations, and, of course, we shopped! And there were seven acres of horse trailers alone!!

This is the entrance. By the way, we stayed at the Doubletree, which was walking distance to the Expo. Though we drove. But you get in-and-out parking priviledges, so we could go home and rest up, take a swim, or nap, or grab some of those famous Doubletree chocolate chip cookies before the evening performances. This is a really fun trip, and if you fly the ATA flight from Hilo to Oakland, its not too bad of a drive to Sacramento in the evening. The Doubletree is across from a great mall, too, for those non-equestrian purchases.

Thanks Joan, for the suggestion to post this!
See you at the Expo - June 8 to 10, 2007

New Dressage Tests!!

Click HERE to get the movements for the 2006 Dressage Tests, Training Level though 4th Level.

Click HERE to get the new Dressage Tests for eventing, Beginner Novice through Advanced Test 3.

Spectators guide to Dressage

Mahalo to our Volunteers

A belated Mahalo to our HIDCA volunteers for the October Dressage Show at HPA. But this post is dedicated to Texas Thunder, the Preifert Ranch Equipment Percheron Draft Horse Team.

Anyone who talked to either Rachel or myself in the weeks following our trip heard us rave about Texas Thunder. All day long theses gorgeous matched Percheron geldings went nose-to-nose with their admirers. They made the rounds of the Expo hitched to their wagon, and in the evenings put on an amazing demo of their maneuvers. Their amazing driver, Jason Goodman, really makes magic happen with his team.

Rachel and I were enchanted/obsessed with Texas Thunder! Each day and evening) of the Expo we made the pilgrimage to their stable; we got to spend a lot of time with the team, whom we affectionately called "our tiny ponies."

Eight Percherons (Shreck, Mark, Kirk, Captain, Dan, Ross, Hank and Goliath) and their gear, wagon, barn, dogs, and humans, travel the country in two 18-wheelers; six Pecherons make up the team at each hitching. The horses average 2200 lbs and are 18.2 hands high (Goliath is 19.1; that's 6'5" at the withers!!!). They travel with an impressive array of gear, as you can see.

Here they are hanging out in their barn. You know those barrels see a lot of action!!!

The team is braided before and unbraided after each ride, averaging three times a day. Check out their fan, and the size of those footstools!

Above is a nice shot of one of the team being tacked up. (see the beautiful braids?.) This is happening behind the 18-wheelers housing all the equipment.

Above, the Team in action, thundering around the arena at the Expo.

Below, unbraiding for the last time and tucking them in for the night.

(Obviously someone has been sweeping up out here. . . )

You can read more about them at the Preifert Ranch Equipment website... Take a look a the video and the photos, its great to see these hardworking but highly pampered boys hanging out in their pasture. And for some reason, that reminded me of fireweed.

Here are a two articles about moldy or dusty hay. Basically, to be on the safe side, avoid it. But by all means, do talk to your vet if you have concerns about feed. Be sure to check your cubes, too!

UC Davis Symposiun article from 1998
Cherry Hill's article "Making Hay"

This is not intended to take the place of advice from you vet.

By the way, I have had excellent luck with double compressed timothy hay, it is compressed so tight it rarely molds even here in Hilo.

I recently got curiouser and curiouser about fireweed. If you are too, you can read the UH Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human resources October 2005 article on fireweed here .

Here's something I didn't know: The article says fireweed is not toxic to sheep in the same levels as it is to horses and cattle. It was a great day, and even the weather cooperated.

Joan Darnell, our judge, gave some very positive scores and comments to many of our aspiring riders. And on Tuesday, she taught clinic lessons for Lisa Johnston, Barb Kankainen, Maureen Goto and Sarah Blanchard. Lots of good help for all of us fortunate enough to participate. Thanks especially to Barb for hosting the clinic (and the yummy lunch!)

So how did we get a top-notch judge from Texas to come to the Big Island? It all started at the 2005 USDF convention in Los Angeles, which I had the privilege of attending with the help of a Ruth Arvanette grant. At the USDF silent auction, which benefits youth members, I noticed that Joan, a highly regarded large-R judge, was donating one day of judging to benefit the auction. So I chatted with Joan a bit to learn more about her, then emailed HIDCTA board memebers, said hey do we want to bid, maybe I can get this great mainland judge at a little bit of a discount, and it would benefit USDF youth programs. So yes, that's what happened!

Joan hadn't been to Hawaii before but is absolutely certain she'll be back, hopefully with her husband, in the near future. We really appreciated her kind and generous approach to teaching and judging, and we wish her well as she trains, shows and campaigns her own young horses in Texas. Thanks, Joan!

Sarah

A Trailering Tale and a New Friend of HIDCTA

Do you check your trailer tires regularly? So do we. But on the way home from the HPA Fall Show October 8, our trailer had tire trouble. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, have a look....

Lesson 1. Have your tires checked professionally. Visually, they were fine, and had been checked. It looked FINE when they pulled out of HPA. But clearly, this tire had issues. Kalima was able to pull over before the entire thing blew apart. Thank you Kalima and Tim!!!

Unfortunately, while the trailer was on its way back to Horseplay in Kona with Wile E. Coyote, Rockstar, and Kahikolea, the trailer's spare-tire key was on its way to Hilo with the Rechtmans. OOPS!

Lesson 2. Keep all the parts of the trailer in one place. The trailer key is now living separately from its best pal, the key to the tackroom at Panaewa. Spare keys are good, too. But make sure they work before you need them.

Rachel and I drove back to Puako to get the key to our stranded Horseplay friends Ashley Hedeman and her boyfriend and our hero/driver, Kalima; Stephanie Kiely and her boyfriend Tim, and First and Second Level Champion Angela Trevithick. Unfortunately, in the meantime, they had determined that the truck's lug wrench did not fit the trailer lugnuts. Upon my arrival, we learned that neither did the one from my Honda.

Lesson 3. Call the Auto Club at the first sign of trouble. Our optimistic assessment of lugnut/lugwrench relationships was faulty and wasted valuable daylight time. The Auto Club estimated an hour and a half wait.

Lesson 4. When you sell your old truck, make sure there are no tools under the seat. Always keep EVERYTHING you might need in the trailer.

Lesson 5. Make sure your trailer exterior lights work, even if they worked the previous week. Just to be on the safe side, get the biggest flashlight you can find, and buy new batteries before you haul.

With the useless lugwrenches stowed away once again, and the Auto Club on its way, Stephanie and Rachel took to flagging down passers-by. A big truck hauling a huge boat was about to pull out on the the highway in the fading light. The girls stopped just short of throwing themselves in front of the wheels, and here's where it gets fun for YOU TOO), Captain Casey and Keoni from AdventureXrafting joined our little party.

Their lugwrench was a match. The tire change happened in a flash.
But it gets even better than that. Casey used to ride Combined Training in California!! What are the chances of that!!! (By the way, watch the blog for his Bates saddle up for sale soon.)

And here's the great part!!! Casey and Keoni have donated 6 trips on their fabulously fun 30' Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat to HIDCTA!! We will use them either for show awards or some other great surprise.

Lesson 6. Never underestimate the smallness of the world or the largeness of people's hearts. There was lots of Aloha that evening, and it turned a potential bummer into a nice little tale.

In the long run, it was a minor hassle that could have been a lot worse. We made great new friends, and certainly appreciate Ashley, Kalima, Stephanie, Tim, and Angela, who got home quite late. And we have to give props to the horses, who were quite patient with the entire situation.

And special thanks to our new friends Casey and Koeni, whom we hope to see at our next show. In the meantime, do remember them if you have visitors this holiday season. They sail out of Puako.

Here's wishing you safe adventures on land and sea,
Pattie

High Point Scores from October 8 HPA Show

Congratulations to our high point riders!

Special kudos to Sydney Wiecking on her High Point Ride of the Day on Goodwin Her score of 73.1 in Training Level Test 2 sets the bar pretty high. That led me to think that perhaps the general membership might be interested in knowing about this small but wonderful company.

There are many great companies out there, and most of us have to shop at a couple of different places to get everything we need. So please do have a look at VTO Saddlery as you shop. The great feature about this company, which specializes in Dressage and Combined Training equipment and supplies, is that it ALWAYS charges a flat rate of $3.99 for shipping, even to Hawaii.

I just made an order with them so I can attest personally to this. They send it out priority mail, too, not on the slow boat. I ordered a saddle a couple years ago and paid the same low rate.

VTO Saddlery has supported the club with ads, class sponsorships, and gift certificates in the past, and it would be great to support them while we save a fortune on shipping, too!

(They also have a great pull-on breech for $34.95; and nice selection of Courbette reins.)

If you have a product review, or want to give thumbs up to a particular vendor (or have another idea of a post that would be in interest to the membership), please email Pattie for an invitation to post on the blog.

Happy Shoppping!

Alzheimers Association Memory Walk in Kona October 28

Our illustrious interim HIDCTA president, Janet Schmuckal, reminds us that the Alzheimer's Association is planning its second Big Island Memory Walk October 28 in Kona. Here is an excerpt from the Artistic Endeavor section of the online course.

Next, know the mandatory elements for the level you wish to show, since they are not always the same as the standard tests. Did you know that turn on the haunches or walk pirouette is not required at any level, except for the Juniors? This is important because you may opt not to show that element, especially if it is not a strong one for your horse. To find out what is required, check the score sheets. Many GMOs print them in their omnibus, but if yours does not, obtain score sheets from the USDF by contacting them via phone or through this web site. Other differences are that the halt and salute can be anywhere on the centerline, and that changes from element to element do not need to be at the letters, though they still should occur in a logical place.

Understand what is meant by above the level. As stated in the USDF pamphlet "Musical Freestyle--Rules, Guidelines, and Definitions", movements are leg-yield, rein-back, travers, renvers, shoulder-in, half-pass at trot, half-pass at canter, flying changes, turn on the haunches, pirouettes, piaffe, and passage. Deliberately doing a movement above the level you are showing will incur a four-point penalty for USDF levels, and elimination for FEI levels. For example, showing half-pass at level two would be prohibited, as would an intermediate ride with one tempis. Movements should not be confused with figures (circle, figure 8, and so on) or transitions (walk to canter, etc.). A first level rider, therefore, would be permitted to perform a canter to halt because it is a transition and not a movement. Likewise a third level rider would be permitted to perform a steep half-pass zig zig, because it is a pattern, not a movement. To add clarity, all possible permitted and forbidden movements and transitions are listed inside the USDF score sheet.

Have fun!

Another Horse Legislation Update

Here is the American Humane Society update on the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

On September 7, the U.S. House voted 263-146 to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503), moving the country closer to preventing the annual slaughter of nearly 100,000 horses in the United States for human consumption abroad. Now it's time for the Senate to act on behalf of America's horses.

TAKE ACTION. Please make a short polite phone call to your two U.S. Senators today. You can reach your Senators by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, or click here to find their Capitol office phone numbers. Making a call is easy. All you need to say is:

"I am a constituent and I am calling to ask my Senator to please protect American horses from slaughter. The House has voted overwhelmingly to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1915) and now it is time for the Senate to act. Please do all that you can to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act and move it to the Senate floor for an immediate vote. Thank you."

Visit the Humane Society S.1915 contact page here.

By the way, here is Buckshott H., who was headed to the slaughter house. He is one of the lucky ones who was rescued. Purchased for weight, Buckshott is now competing Second Level in Florida and elsewhere....It's important to know that it is not just sick and old horses who are sent for slaughter. This horse's owner passed away and the will did not provide instructions on what to do with him.

Grassroots Contacts Needed Now on “Right to Ride” Bill

This is a call to action from the American Horse Council.

"The House of Representatives has passed Congressman George Radanovich’s “Right-to-Ride” bill (H.R. 586). The bill is intended to protect the use and access of pack and saddle stock animals on public lands, wilderness areas, national monuments, and other areas that are administered by the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, or the Forest Service where there is a historical tradition of such use. The legislation would require that these federal agencies manage these lands to preserve and facilitate the traditional and continued use and access of horses to these areas. As you know, Right-to-Ride legislation is important to riders and their continued use of public lands. We want to keep all federal lands open to riders and pack stock.

The House-passed bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

The Riders and organizations must now turn their attention to the Senate bill (S. 781), which has been introduced by Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) and is before that same Committee. It is vital to the passage of this legislation that we generate broad support in the industry and convey that message of support to Senators.

If we have any hope of passing this legislation this year, contacts are urgently needed showing the broad support in the riding community and asking Senators to support the bill and to co-sponsor it. If your Senator is a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee (a list is attached), ask them to move the bill to the Senate floor for a final vote. But contacts are needed to all Members of the Senate, even Senators not on the Committee. The more contacts we generate showing Senators that recreational riders’ support this bill, the greater the chance of passage.

When contacting your Senator, please fax a copy of the attached letter to him or her. Faxing the letter is much quicker than mail because of the security process for mail to the Congress. If you do not know your Senators fax number, you can find it at the Senate website at http://www.senate.gov/ and by following the instructions.

Also attached are Talking Points in support of the bill in case you speak to your Senator or his/her staff about this legislation.

Thank you for your support and involvement. Please fax us copies of any letters you send to Congress. The AHC fax number is 202-296-1970. Please do not hesitate to contact the AHC at (202) 296-4031 if you have any questions."

To read the entire letter, and obtain a copy of the letter to fax to your senators, please click here.

Mahalo to Pattie!

Many mahalos to Pattie for setting up our HIDCTA blog!
